The pattern is based on the paintings of Harry Hammersley, one of Spode's famous Victorian artists, who specialized in painting fruits and flowers. Gainsborough is one of a group of pattern produced in the 1930s developing the theme of floral studies. Printed and painted underglaze, Gainsborough demonstrates the brilliance of Spode's colors
