During the depression people didn't have ice for cold drinks in the summer as freezers were rare. Many used ice for keeping food as refrigerators were uncommon and small. Companies such L.E. Smith and made glass with a molded-in crackle to simulate the look of ice. The crackle effect is made by raised lines on the underside/outside of these pieces.
By Cracky was introduced in 1925 and was referred to as No. 88 Crackled. It is best known today however, under the name Hazel Marie Weatherman bestowed on pattern No 88...."By Cracky"! The original colors were clear, amber, canary and ebony/black.
It should be noted that the McKee Glass company made "Crackle" in only the clear glass.
