Russel Wright Casual by Iroquois began production in 1946. A criticism of this line's wildly successful predecessor, American Modern, had been that the dinnerware chipped and broke easily. Casual was designed to wear well, and it does. In fact, during in-store promotions for Casual, Russel Wright was known to throw the items on the floor to illustrate their durability. The dinnerware was redesigned five times, with the last design in 1959
Wright designed the first line of melamine resin plastic dinnerware for the home called "Residential" manufactured by Northern Plastic Company of Boston, MA. This was the most popular "melmac" plastic line in the 1950's and received the Museum of Modern Art Good Design Award in 1953. The line remained popular for many years continuing in production by Home Decorators.
