With textural exuberance tempered by quiet color, creamware has created exquisite table settings for centuries. Developed in the mid-1700s by English potters as an alternative to patterned porcelain from China, it became an instant sensation. The first creamware was a breakfast set given by English industrialist Josiah Wedgwood to Queen Charlotte, who was so smitten with the delectable china that she allowed him to call it queensware.
The Shafford Japan Cambridge Creamware Teapot is in near mint condition. The only thing we spotted (actually felt rather than seen at first) are two very small chips on the under side of the spout. Fortunately they are almost imperceptible and do not carry through to the top of the spout.
The underside of the Shafford Japan Cambridge Creamware Teapot is hallmarked in deep blue with "Shafford Creamware, Strata Group Japan, MCXLXXXVII" The teapot also has its' original paper label affixed which is printed in green and reads "Due to Hand Painting, Decorating may vary from item to item, Shaffors, Japan".
